Welcome to ProfitBasecamp: how this site works

A short tour of the trail map, the free tools and the honest way we pick and review gear, so you can start climbing in five minutes.

Welcome to ProfitBasecamp: how this site works

Most money advice is written for people who already have a business. ProfitBasecamp is written for the moment before that, and for the long middle after it, when you are busy, tired and trying to turn effort into steady profit.

The idea is simple. Think of earning a living on your own as climbing a mountain with four camps. You do not need to see the summit from the parking lot. You need to know where the next camp is and what to pack to reach it.

A mountain profile showing Basecamp, Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3 and the Summit
The route: pick an idea, make a first sale, automate, then scale.

The four camps

  • Camp 1: Pick an idea. Choose one audience and one problem you can solve. Short list, real conversations, clear yes or no.
  • Camp 2: First sale. Write the offer, find the buyer, get paid. Small and boring beats big and clever.
  • Camp 3: Automate. Let tools handle invoices, follow-ups and reminders so your income does not depend on your memory.
  • Summit: Scale. Raise prices, package your work and build a referral engine.

Every guide on the site belongs to one of these camps, or to a supporting category like money and pricing or AI and tools.

Where to begin

If you are brand new, read Start Here. If you freelance, jump to the freelancer trail. If you run a business, take the small business trail. Not sure? Take the two-minute quiz and it will point you at your camp.

The free tools

  • Profit calculators for hourly rate, break-even, margin and project pricing.
  • The Summit Score, a twelve-question check-up on your offer, money, systems and growth.
  • The climb tracker, which saves your progress in your own browser and awards badges.
  • A small game, Summit Sprint, because learning sticks when it is fun.

The gear shop lists the tools we think are worth a look. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. That never decides what we list or how we describe it, and our reviews are editorial picks based on public information and common use cases, not lab tests. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

How we report results

The expedition log is our public record of experiments: hours, spend, revenue and lessons. It starts at zero, because everything does. We will update it honestly, including the flops. If you want to run your own experiments the same way, read how to run and report a business experiment.

Key takeaways

  • Four camps: pick an idea, first sale, automate, scale.
  • Start with the quiz if you are unsure where you are.
  • Use the free tools and the tracker. Nothing is gated.
  • Join the Summit Brief for one idea, one tool and one number each week.
